Our Lux-sparious Getaway!

Wednesday, February 16, 2011
This past weekend, Jeff and I went to Sonoma. Jeff had a groupon for one night at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and then since I had the weekend off, we added two more nights at the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country. We had such a great weekend! On Saturday, we went to visit Charbay, a family-run winery and distillery. We were a little bummed because the things that we really wanted to buy (blood orange vodka and whiskey) we weren't able to because they don't have a liquor license. However, we still tried some AMAZING things: cabernet, pomegranate dessert wine, ruby port, green tea aperitif, and a late harvest sauvignon (dessert wine). Everything was super tasty! The green tea aperitif (served on the rocks with a splash of lemonade) and the late harvest sauvignon were my two favorites. They were (a) super sweet and (b) super refreshing!

Part Two

After our tasting, we headed into St. Helena where we went to Sunshine foods to grab lunch items. We walked out with some bread, prosciutto di parma, felino salame, and brie. The perfect fixings for a great lunch. We headed back to the hotel to picnic by the pool (our room had a small deck outside facing the pool). After lunch, we drove around a little bit into Calistoga but then were tired so headed back to the hotel for a little nap before dinner. For dinner, we headed into Healdsburg to the Dry Creek Kitchen where we met up with Bryan and Rob (I work with Bryan). Dinner was heavenly! After dinner, we decided to go see Just Go With It, the new Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston movie. I had already seen it on Thursday and thought it was hilarious so I was happy to see it again! Also, they feature a Waldorf Astoria property in Hawaii, the Grand Wailea. Needless to say, I will need to go visit this property as it looks like paradise!

On Sunday, we packed up and headed towards the Fairmont. We stopped at three different wineries to have a little look-see. The first place we stopped, Deerfield, has wine tasting in a cave. It was pretty cool (both literally and figuratively). The wines were good and they even gave us some homemade truffles that were divine!

For wine tasting!

So many barrels!

After Deerfield, we headed to Blackstone Winery. Blackstone was a lot of fun and it was somewhat sad because they are closing the tasting room on Sunday. The wines were really good and we even bought a few! Since they were closing, we even scored some wine glasses.
Dopo Deerfield, siamo andati a Blackstone.

Our last stop was at B.R. Cohn. This was a fun winery because it was set on a beautiful piece of land. The owner is a vintage car collector and had quite a few different cars out to us to look at. I also really liked the wine labels. They were probably the reason we bought some wine (also because it was good).
L'ultima fermata era a B.R. Cohn.

The view

After all of our wine tasting, we headed to the hotel because I had a massage appointment. Now, this was no ordinary appointment. The Spa at the Fairmont Sonoma is dreamy. I really can't think of any other way to describe it. They have you arrive one hour early because you have to: take an exfoliating shower, soak in the jacuzzi, soak in the mineral bath, take a cool shower, sit in the steam sauna, sit in the dry sauna, take another cool shower, and then sit and relax in the waiting area until your treatment. Needless to say, I felt so good after my massage! While I was getting my massage, Jeff checked into the room. We had an AMAZING room. It was one of their suites, and oh my goodness, it was just perfect! It was a HUGE room with a wood-burning fireplace, a massive jacuzzi tub, a balcony, a four-poster bed, two sinks, bathrobes, a free bottle of wine, it was just a perfect way to end our getaway! On Monday, we headed back into the city because it started to rain, but we were nice and relaxed! It was such a great weekend and just what we needed to get away from it all! Can't wait to go back!
Lunedi' siamo dovuti tornare in dietro a casa.
