On President's Day, Noel and I headed up to Julian. It was a gorgeous day for some sightseeing. I had never been up to the mountains in San Diego so it was a fun drive. The drive up is gorgeous and Julian is a darling little town.

We saw signs for a Gold Mine and headed that way.

This particular mine was functioning for quite some time and then it was deserted/went bankrupt. It was interesting to find out that in Julian, they didn't pan for gold since there is no water. They were blasting rock and gold was found within the mountain rock. As we ventured into the old mine, you can still see some specks of gold in the rock.

Actual entrance to the mine

The rock crusher below was very important. It was run/powered by water. As the miners brought up the rocks, they would be crushed. A mixture of water would run through the pieces and the gold would sink to the bottom. It would then be collected and sold.

After our tour of the mine, we headed into town for some pie. Julian is known for its fruit pies since there are so many orchards nearby. The pie from Mom's did not disappoint.

We stopped on our drive back to take some pictures of the scenery.
